With the average person being exposed to as many as 4,000 promotional impressions per day, does your church’s media even have a chance of being noticed?

We live in a media-driven society! From  billboards to social media to TV commercials, we are engulfed in non-stop media overload. And in a culture of media saturation, all promotional attempts by any business or organization yield one of two results- it will stand out from the crowd, or it will drown in the sea of other media noise and distractions. It’s a pass or fail, all or nothing, hero or zero type situation. There’s no in the middle or average grade given here. Your media will either make a lasting impression on someone or it will be ignored and forgotten forever.

So how’s your church media performing? Is it standing out from the countless other marketing attempts or is it merely fading into the background along with everything else? Over the course of these next few posts, our goal is to empower you to take your media to the next level and make a lasting impression on the people of your community. We’re going to guide you through some simple, practical methods for improving essential components of your media such as design and video production.

But before we dive into the specifics, we need to first go over a few general principles that will ensure you are producing great media in every area. The key to success in anything is first having the right mindset or philosophy, and these guidelines will put you on the right track. Each of these principles can best be summed up into three words. Excellence. Simplicity. And Value

The only way your church’s media has a chance of standing out from the crowd is if it is done with excellence. Too many churches believe that they get a pass on creating excellent media because they are “just a church.” But let’s consider that our churches represent Jesus Christ and His amazing message of hope. This is the best news anyone could ever hear. When we grasp this truth, we’ll be more compelled to do everything including our media with excellence.

The next principle is simple… no thats it… Keep it simple. Just because you want to create excellent media does not mean it has to be complex or advanced. In fact, quite the opposite is true. The fact that people are already being blasted with a wide variety of constant media is complicated enough. A sure way to blend in with the media clutter is trying to do too much or explain too much with your promotional materials. Less is more. You should produce media in such a way that anyone can clearly comprehend your message at first glance. Remember, if you confuse, you lose, so make sure your media is simple.

The human mind is geared to instinctively filter the content it observes. Whether you realize it or not, your brain automatically disregards media that lacks excellence and simplicity. The next category it seeks to determine is value. By nature, we only care about what will make our lives better or solve our problems. Advertising that our church has been around for 25 plus years or that our facilities have been recently renovated has very little true value to a potential guest. Though those are great milestones to celebrate, they will not convince someone that your church can bring long term value to them and their family. However, when you show someone that your church is a place where they can discover and nurture a genuine relationship with God and other people, that can make a difference in a family for eternity and therefore carries a much greater value.
